Rock Hill, SC –Dr. Tah-Hsiung Hsu, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. The service will be live-streamed at www.greenefuneralhome.net. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Hsu was the son of the late A. Huang Hsu and the late Yun Mei Lai. He was a 1958 graduate of the National Taiwan University. After serving two years in the military, Dr. Hsu moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and in 1966 graduated near the top of his class from the University of Alabama School of Medicine with membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his Osler Medical residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. After he completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at John Hopkins, he remained there to serve as an Associate Professor of Medicine. After a brief tenure in private practice, he returned to his passion for teaching and joined Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, MD as the Chief of Internal Medicine. In addition to this, he continued to teach younger generations of physicians through appointments at St George’s University in Grenada, Tzu Chi University in Taiwan, and lastly as Clinical Chief of Internal Medicine at St Matthew’s University School of Medicine.
While in Baltimore, he was an avid tennis player and a sports enthusiast. He enjoyed watching all sports but especially Alabama football. He was a lifelong learner; continuing to read medical journals long after retiring, and had passion for medical history, with a particular interest in Sir William Osler. Most of all, he enjoyed simply spending time with his family, whether on cruises, trips to the beach, or outings together to eat sushi or Chinese food.
Dr. Hsu is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lily Li Hsu; his daughter, Dr. Rhea Hsu Jenkins (Dr. Matthew David Jenkins) of Rock Hill; his son, Dr. Kevin Hsu (Dr. Joyce Barreda Hsu) of Charlotte, NC; and his six grandchildren, Connor, Aidan and Kelsey Jenkins and Isabel, Sofia and Mateo Hsu. He is also survived by his brothers, Tah-Chang Hsu, Tah-Hung Hsu and Tah-Chung Hsu all of Taipei, Taiwan, and his sister, Agnes Hsu of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
