Sarah Elizabeth Burguson Strait passed away on June 7, 2024 in Rock Hill, SC. She was born in Charleston, SC on September 3, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Edwin F. Burguson and Alice R. Burguson. She graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston, attended Limestone College, and later graduated from Winthrop University in 1995. In 1952 she became the wife of William F. Strait, III, MD of Rock Hill, SC. Following Dr. Strait’s final training and military service, they made their home in Rock Hill, where they raised their family.

Sarah was a full-time homemaker but engaged herself well in the community. She was active in their church (Oakland Avenue Presbyterian), was a volunteer and board member of the York County Literacy Association, the Park Ave. Adult Day Care Center, Habitat for Humanity, The (former) Girls Home Inc., and The Junior Welfare League. Sarah learned to use a sewing machine when she was nine years old, and continued her love of sewing all her life, making clothes for her children, quilting, doing embroidery and needlepoint, and especially making small gifts for her friends. She was an avid bridge player, a huge reader, and an active member of several social clubs. But nothing gave her more pleasure than her three great-granddaughters.

Sarah is pre-deceased by her husband Frank of 69 years and survived by her three daughters Mary Strait Hoppmann, Alice Strait Coggins (Barry), and Helen Ruth Strait. All three of her girls were excellent caregivers. Also surviving are her beloved sister Barbara Burguson Griffith, of Simpsonville, SC, grandson Harry Hoppmann (Kelly) of Columbia, SC, granddaughter Emmy Hoppmann Bazemore (Micheal) of Rock Hill, and three extraordinary great-granddaughters Lucy Gardner Hoppmann, Lillian Strait Hoppmann and Ava Elizabeth Bazemore.

Funeral services will be held at Oakland Ave. Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill on June 23, 2024 at 3 pm, with private burial at a later date. Memorials can be made to the OAPC Compassionate Care Fund – OAPC, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill SC 29732.
