Rock Hill, SC – Robert Hamiter Hopkins, of Rock Hill, SC, died peacefully at home early Sunday, July 2, 2023. Born to the Reverend Frederick Anderson and Annie Hopkins, Robert graduated from York High School. He received his BA degree from Presbyterian College where he made many lifelong friends; an MBA from Winthrop University and completed the Health Administrators Management School from Duke. Robert proudly served his country as a member of the 101st Airborne receiving two Silver Stars, one Bronze and other recognitions for his personal bravery and devotion to duty while serving in Korea and Vietnam.
In 1968 Robert married Catherine Erwin Carothers and, after a brief time in Louisiana, they returned to make Rock Hill their home. After service Robert served as Personnel Administrator at JP Stevens, and later as Personnel Administrator at York General Hospital (now PMC). In 1985, Robert assumed the role of Fifth District Administrator for U.S. Congressman John Spratt where he was proud and honored to help and serve his community for 22 years before retiring. Robert also served on the Presbyterian College Board of Trustees.
Retiring in 2007, Robert enjoyed his years as a Master Gardener, volunteering at several local charities and spending time travelling with his wife and enjoying his beloved children and grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Cathie; his children Chris Hopkins of Rock Hill, SC, Catherine Garside (Mark) of Columbia, SC, and Jonathan Hopkins of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren Mark Alexander Garside, Anderson Cate Garside, Eloise Vivian Garside and Ramsay Hopkins Williams; and also his sister Anne Ramsay Melton of Laurinburg, NC. Robert will be missed by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
The Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 6th 11:00 a.m. at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and Deacon. The service will be livestreamed through their website. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 5th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the home.
