Norman “Norm or Mump” Alexander Culbertson, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at his home.

Norman was a loving husband and a wonderful father.  He was a native of Greenville, SC, born on February 17, 1942. He graduated from Greenville High School (1960) and then attended Duke University where he was a Phi Beta Kappa and earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1964 Norman married the love of his life, Sandra Attaway. They moved to Florida where he earned his MS degree in Control Systems from the University of Florida. He was a registered Professional Engineer and retired from the Celanese Corporation after 34 years.  He held positions as Engineering Manager at the Florence, SC, polyester plant and at the Goose Creek, SC, guar plant, and as Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager at the Rock Hill Cellulose Acetate plant.  He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and was a former board president of the Speech & Hearing Center of York & Chester Counties and of the Rock Hill Country Club.  After his retirement, he was involved in the Celriver Legacy Project to preserve the legacy of the Celanese Celriver facility. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, joking, math, eating, and spending time with his family and his dogs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sandra Attaway Culbertson; his children, Kelly Martinek (John), Carol Holtzclaw (Chris), and Norman “Chip” Alexander Culbertson Jr. (Robyn); his grandson, Joseph “Joey” A. Martinek (Amy); and his great-granddaughter, Evelyn “Evie” L. Martinek. Norman is also survived by numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Norman is preceded in death by his late parents, Wylie Jehugh and Rubye Sharpe Mills Culbertson; and his siblings, Wylie J. Culbertson and Suzanne Culbertson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00PM on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

The family will receive visitors at 2:30PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
