Marion’s roots in Maine were deep. The daughter of a potato farmer, she grew up during the Depression and learned to drive a tractor when she was ten. She raised steers on their farm and showed them competitively. When she sold them, she used the money to pay for tuition at the University of Maine. She was also an exchange student to Scotland with the International Farm Youth Exchange. She went on to serve as the class president for many years and enjoyed reuniting with fellow alumni. While raising a family, Marion and Richard lived in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, and South Carolina. Marion made friends easily and, after Richard’s death just a year after their move to Rock Hill, carved out a new life for herself in Rock Hill. She volunteered at church, with the Museum of York County, and Historic Brattonsville. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and participated in multiple writing, photography, and art contests. She was a weaver, did theorem painting on velvet, reverse painting on glass, and needlepoint. She ran into Bill Mannheim, a former classmate, at one of their reunions and the two were soon married. They enjoyed many years of great traveling with the Matinicus Isle off the coast of Maine as her favorite destination. Toward the end of her life, she gathered donated yarn and recruited friends and strangers to crochet squares that she then assembled into afghans. She and Bill drove to Columbia, SC regularly to donate the afghans to patients on the oncology unit at William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs.
The family is grateful for the loving care of the staff of Providence Hospice and White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.
