On June 6, 2024, John Blair “Red” Cox passed away peacefully at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, surrounded by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at West End Baptist Church, 1727 McConnells Hwy, Rock Hill, SC 29732. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Red was born on January 4, 1960 in Spartanburg, SC. He was a graduate of Northwestern High School where he was a standout player and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended Winthrop College and received the first baseball scholarship in school history. Red was known for his knowledge of baseball, his outstanding coaching techniques, and his antics as an umpire in baseball and college softball. He was known for being the founder of the Carolina Reds, the first travel baseball team in Rock Hill.
Red was employed for many years in security at Duke Power, Bowater, and lastly, Clover High School.
Red was preceded in death by his father, Jim Cox, his mother, Patsy Cox, his brother, Joe Cox, and his son, Daniel Cox. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne, his amazing son, Ryan Cox, son, Billy Rinehart, and son, Michael Rinehart (Claudia); his precious grandchildren, Caroline, Greyson, and Maryn Cox, Jennifer Rinehart and Haley Davis; his brothers, Jim Cox (Jeanie), and Jack Cox (Emily).
