Rock Hill, SC – Jean Sprunt Douglas Barnes went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 29, 2024. She was preceded in death by her father, Reverend Charles Kirkpatrick Douglas; her mother Nellie Peck White Douglas; her brother Charles Kirkpatrick “Pat” Douglas, Jr.; and her husband, John Milling Barnes, Sr.
Jean was born December 15, 1927, in Rock Hill, SC, and spent her early years in Seneca, SC and Walterboro, SC. She graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1945 and Queens College in Charlotte, NC in 1949. Jean taught Second grade in Camden, SC until 1951 when John asked for her hand. They were married by her father and were perfect mates, having shared values, dreams, and a strong faith throughout their 53 years of marriage. Their devotion to Christ, instilled by both of their families, was joined and evidenced by their continued involvement and stewardship at First Presbyterian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Jean’s involvement included the Junior Welfare League, the Debutante Club, Glencairn Garden Club, Come-See-Me Committee, Amelia Pride Book Club, and the Manning Biggers Sunday School class.
Jean is survived by her sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Stevenson of Greenwood, SC.; her son, John Milling Barnes, Jr. (Martha), her daughter, Jean (“Jeanie”) Sprunt Barnes Fuleihan (Brian) and her son, Charles Douglas Barnes (Christy). “Gram,” as she was affectionately known, had eight grandchildren, John Wriston Barnes, Virginia Gracen Barnes, Donald Milling Barnes, Niven White Murray Barnes, Douglas Kirkpatrick Barnes (Courtney), Ashlei Gunn Barnes Davis (Wesley), Bailey Allison Barnes, and Eleanor Jean Barnes, and two great- grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. The family will receive friends following the service in Heritage Hall at Westminster Towers.
