Rock Hill – Mr. John Melvin “Jack” Ligon, 94, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
Born in York County, SC on May 25, 1928, Mr. Ligon was the son of the late George Nicholas Ligon and the late Hannah Corine Parrish Ligon. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, William Ligon, Heyward Ligon, Claude Ligon, Clem Ligon, and James Ligon; and his sisters, Virginia Nichols, Anna Falls, and Frances Gaston. He was a US Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War and spent his career working at Rock Hill Printing and Finishing retiring in 1992. He continued to work for York County, finally retiring at age 88.
He was an avid golfer, continuing to play until he was 89. Jack-Jack, as he was known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the family patriarch and the family historian. He loved compiling the family history but loved his family above all else. He will be sorely missed.
Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Mary Merchant Ligon; his daughter, Cathy Griffin (David) of Rock Hill; his grandchildren, Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Jeannie), Courtney Fitzpatrick Heinlein (Kurt), Rachael Griffin Daniels (Eric), and Hannah Griffin Oxendine (Aaron); his great-grandchildren, Sutton, Leighton, Elias, Eve, James, Georgia, Charley, Ethan, and Maddox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Ligon’s name to the “Newland House”, (a retirement home for Ligon family members-a cause near and dear to Jack’s heart), LFKA, c/o Laine Ligon, 3125 Longleaf Rd, Columbia, SC 29205. In memo area, notate “Newland House in honor of John Ligon”.
