Doris was born Doris Arlene Montgomery on April 5, 1924, in Rummersfield, Pennsylvania, to Ralph and Kathleen Montgomery. She was one of three children. Her much-loved younger brother, Dean, passed away this past year. Doris graduated from Breezeport (NY) High School in 1941. On November 1, 1941, she married Lloyd Taylor in Spencer, New York. Shortly thereafter, Lloyd went to war, was wounded, and spent an extended period of time in the hospital recovering from his injuries. Upon his recovery, he returned home and within the next several years they moved to North Chemung (NY) and had two sons: Gary and Duane. Their third son Gregory was born in 1951. In 1958, they moved to Syracuse (NY) where their fourth son Dale was born in 1961. In 1965, the family moved back to the Elmira region from Syracuse.
Doris was an outstanding worker through the years with Westinghouse, A&P, and Marine Midland and Chemung Canal banks. While working full-time, she and Lloyd raised their four sons and also opened their home as foster parents. Having moved many times and worked on home renovations with Lloyd, she was bitten by the real estate bug and also earned her real estate license.
After their oldest sons were married and had begun families of their own, Lloyd retired from construction and, seeking to get away from cold weather in New York, Lloyd, Doris and Dale moved south to the Atlanta area where Doris continued to work in the banking industry while Lloyd retired and worked part-time. Together they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. In 1988, they moved to Charlotte (NC) where she continued to work part-time, worked with the Election Board, and cared for some of her grandchildren. During the time she lived in Charlotte Doris also served as an Elder at Robinson Presbyterian Church. In 2001, Doris and Lloyd moved to Rock Hill.
At 100-years young, Doris was an avid reader, loved to play board games (very competitive and hated to lose!), attended Bible study, enjoyed crafts and being around her family and friends. Until a few years ago she was playing golf. She was a mother of 4, grandmother of 10, great grandmother of 20, and great-great grandmother of 11.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd Taylor, her father and mother Ralph and Kathleen Montgomery, son Gary Taylor, and brother Dean Montgomery. She is survived by sons Duane (Deidra), Gregory (Maryon), and Dale (fiancé, Regina) Taylor; daughter-in-law Joyce Taylor, sister-in-law Sally Montgomery; grandchildren Pam (John), Gary (Trisha), Brian (Aimee), Cindy, Melissa (Danny), Jason (Ilsa), Keri (Bobby), James, Meghan and Kayla, 22 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, and many dear and loyal friends.
The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff members of Via Hospice and Wellmore Living for taking such great care of Doris while under their care, and the special love and attention shown to our family. You have been a true blessing to all of us.
A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Taylor at 12:00PM on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
