Charlotte, NC – Mr. Claude Lester Ross, 84, passed away Monday, March 25, 2024.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 29, 2024 from 12:30-1:30 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill.
Born in Fort Mill, SC, Claude was the son of the late John L. Ross and the late Mildred Griffith Ross. He was a 1958 graduate of York High School and served in the United States Navy from 1959-1963. In 1963, Claude worked at JP Stevens Mill in Rock Hill, and later worked as a Rock Hill Police Officer in 1964. He began to taking classes at York Technical College and got a job with Duke Power Co. in Charlotte in 1968. After moving to Charlotte, Claude started night classes at UNCC and completed his Bachelor of Engineering Technology at UNCC on May 12, 1979. He taught night classes for 15 years at CPCC teaching AC/DC while working for Duke Power during the day. After 17 years, Claude took an early retirement from Duke Power, but was called back to continue working as a contractor.
Claude also enjoyed working at the Carolina Raptor Center and teaching children about birds. He enjoyed coaching Tee-ball, baseball and soccer, as well as, basketball for the Derite area.
Claude is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Hargett Ross; his son, Robert Wayne Ross (Laura) of Pineville; his sisters, Mary Deaver and Lois Coick; his brother, James Ross; granddaughter, Jessica and great-grandchildren, Keaton and Merritt. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Ross.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Claude’s name to the Carolina Raptor Center, 6000 Sample Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.
