Charlotte, NC – Anna Transou Hull, 84, of Charlotte, NC and formerly Rock Hill, SC, passed away on June 30, 2024 after a hard-fought battle with leukemia.  A memorial service to celebrate Anna’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 9 at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, 144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill SC 29730.

Anna was born on March 25,1940 to Mr. and Mrs. William Monford Transou and grew up in Greensboro, NC along with her brother Billy and many aunts, uncles and cousins from her mother’s large family. Anna graduated from Salem Academy and Salem College and then started work in Durham, NC.  She met the love of her life, Dr. William M. Hull, Jr. (Bill) at the wedding of her cousin Sandra Holderness, whom she considered a sister, to Lawrence Davis.  Anna and Bill were married on December 14,1963 and had two children, Martin and Alice.  While her husband served in the United States Army, Anna and her family lived in Greensboro, NC; San Antonio, TX: Savannah, GA and Tacoma, WA before settling in Rock Hill, SC in 1969.

In Rock Hill, Anna quickly became involved in the community and made so many wonderful friends.  She was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, serving on its Vestry and Altar Guild and teaching Sunday School.  She was a constant force in her children’s school life and education and ran so many fundraisers that it’s hard to count.  She was a member of the Rock Hill Debutante Club, the Junior Welfare League, the Florabunda Club, and the Perihelion Book Club. She especially cherished her friendships with the Rock Hill Sisters of the Highway and her and Bill’s monthly Steak Club.

Anna loved to host a party. She would often tell Bill that they were “having a few people over” only to have the whole neighborhood show up.  Her family fondly remembers the Christmas Eve party she would throw for friends and neighbors while living on Granville Road.  Her voice was always heard above all others at this and any other party and she did not lack an ability to provide subtle instructions to her husband and kids.

Later in her life, she and Bill enjoyed spending their summers in Linville, NC.  This came as a surprise to their children as the Hulls had always been beach people.  The family quickly developed many new and lasting friendships. They came to love the cool mountain air and the Linville community.  There Anna served on the Bridge Committee spending many hours on the phone arranging weekly bridge games (and keeping up with the latest news).  She attended All Saints Episcopal Church in Linville serving on the church’s Mission Committee and handling the church’s wedding calendar for many years.  She also took up golf and was a member of the Ladies Golf Association.  She wasted no time on the golf course. Many of her son’s friends thought she could play eighteen holes faster than anyone else in Linville.  She especially enjoyed working the registration table at the Ladies Invitational Tournament (the “Toonamint” as she called it) for years with Tom Dale. As was the case in Rock Hill, she loved to cook and host “a few of her mountain friends” for dinners and parties.

Anna is survived by her husband of almost sixty-one years, William M. Hull, Jr., her son W. Martin Hull III (Page), her daughter Alice Hull Torstrick (Brent), her beloved grandchildren Will, Brad and Ned Hull and Anna, Reese and Maggie Torstrick, her brother William M. Transou, Jr. (Jann Holderness) and many cousins and relatives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Episcopal Church of Our Savior (144 Caldwell Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730), the Linville Foundation (PO Box 99, Linville, NC 28646), or a charity of one’s choice.

Lastly, the family would like to thank the staff and nurses at the Levine Cancer Institute, the Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster and the Stewart Health Center at the Cypress of Charlotte for their exceptional care.
