Born in Rock Hill, SC, Mrs. Long was the daughter of the late James B. Potts, Sr. and the late Margaret Dunlap Potts.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Long, Sr. and her son, John Long, Jr.

Mrs. Long was a retired teacher who taught for more than 30 years throughout York, Chester, and Mecklenburg counties. She taught math in both middle and high school and also taught special education students.  She was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rock Hill. Her involvement was broad, but included being a member of both the choir and the handbell choir, and volunteering as a scout leader. She enjoyed offering her time and talents in many areas within the church, but was well-known for setting up the large outdoor Advent wreath each year at Christmas.  Mrs. Long was a member of the Rock Hill Civitan Club and held every office on the board throughout the years. Her parents were charter members of the Civitan Club which instilled her love for the organization. She poured her time into serving with the Civitan Club and their many charitable projects and initiated many Jr. Civitan clubs in local high schools.

Mrs. Long was a social butterfly who stayed active throughout her life, but especially in her retirement. She was a member of several senior groups, including “Never Grow Old” and “Golden Group.”  She also loved spending time in her yard, but more than that, time with her family was her greatest joy.

Surviving are her sons, Brian (Natalie) Long; Michael (Nicole) Long; her granddaughter, Caitlin (Brandon) Aronoff; two grandsons, Elliott Long and Caleb Long; great-granddaughter, Iris Aronoff; her brother, James (Susan) Potts Jr.; her friend and companion, Bob Stang; and many other extended family members.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the Hospice staff and Mrs. Long’s large circle of friends for their love and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Long’s name to the Rock Hill Civitan Club, 748 Emorywood Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to St. John’s Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
