Rock Hill, SC – Command Sergeant Major Johnnie Clyde Robinson (Ret.) went to be with his lord and savior on July 20, 2024.

He was born on February 9, 1931 in Lancaster, SC to his mother and father, Eva Hinson Robinson and John Robinson. His father died in 1939 leaving behind 3 boys and 3 girls. The family moved to a cotton farm to live with a family member. He spent most of his childhood at this cotton farm near Midway and Flat Creek. He attended Midway and Flat Creek Schools.

Johnnie had 3 sisters, Kathleen R. Griffin, Willie Robinson, and Shirley R. Morgan as well as his two brothers William Lee Robinson “Bill” and Hazel Harris Robinson “Tib”. He also had several half brothers and sisters.

Johnnie married Betty Joy Roddey, on 11-19-1954. They had two children: Trina Robinson Conrad, and Johnnie Clyde Robinson Jr.

Johnnie lived a remarkable life for 93 years. He accomplished many things and some of his most proud accomplishments were while serving in the U.S. Army.

In April 1948, at 17, Johnnie joined the US Army. He served faithfully in the US Army for 27 ½ years, retiring in September of 1975. Anyone who knows Johnnie, knows that he was the definition of an US Army soldier. He lived his professional and personal life like a true soldier. He was often found playing Army with his grandchildren when they were growing up.

Johnnie served in many places during his time in the Army. He served in Korea 3 times, Japan, Germany, Vietnam, and Cambodia. While enlisted in the army, he reached the rank of Command Sergeant Major. This is the highest rank an enlisted man can reach. He received many awards during his time in the army. Some of these awards were: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Arm of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Bravery Gold Medal of Greece.

Once Johnnie retired from the Army, he took a job with Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC. He worked in the security department and at the corporate headquarters. He attended SLED law enforcement school during his time with Duke Energy. He eventually retired from Duke Energy.

Johnnie also served for many years at Rock Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2889. During his time with the V.F.W. he served as Post Commander and SC State Commander.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Joy Robinson, as well as all of his brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his children Trina Robinson Conrad (Ray) and Johnnie C. Robinson Jr. (Sherry), his grandchildren; Trey Conrad (Brittany), Erica Haile (Justin), Carrie Pike (Cameron), Jamie Robinson (Alex Sistare). He also has several great grandchildren, Zoey McCarter, Lucas Haile, Logan Haile, Eleanor Conrad, Lincoln Conrad, Vera Ray Pike, and one on the way. He is also survived by his closest friend, Kathy Jaggers.

Johnnie’s family will receive friends at 10:00 am at Greene Funeral Home (Ebenezer Road) on Thursday, July 25, 2024. The service will immediately follow after the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Disabled American Veterans in Johnnie’s memory.
