Fort Lawn, SC – George Wilson Whitley, Jr. passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at his home.
George was born on March 1, 1940, in Mint Hill, NC, to the late George Wilson Whitley, Sr. and Lena Crowell Whitley. He served his country in the United States Air Force for 21 years and retired with honorable service. George also worked in both the textile and banking fields as a Computer Programmer and Systems Analyst during his lifetime. In recent years, he spent much of his time at the Fort Lawn Community Center in support of the educational programs for young children. Nothing made him happier than to bring the children treats such as drinks and ice cream. George also enjoyed fishing, gardening and building things for himself and others. His true passion was buying and selling real estate in his retirement years.
George is survived by his wife, Frankie Jones Whitley; his sister, Anne York (Dan); his children, Beth Smith (Stan), Wayne Whitley (Laurie), and Lisa Ackerman (Walt); Frankie’s children, Cindy Hedgepath (Danny), Chuck Simpson, and Mark Simpson; his grandchildren, Erin Hyers (Dustin), Reid Smith, Andrew Ackerman, D.J. Hedgepath, Nikki Hedgepath, David Simpson, Kayla Weaverling (Joey), Peyton Simpson and Dru Simpson; his great-grandchildren, Timothy Hyers, Thomas Hyers, Mackenzie Hyers, Jaden Hedgepath, Aubrey Hedgepath, Allston Weaverling, Collton Weaverling, Anna Bayne, and Sam Bledsoe; and his niece, Caroline York. George was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ruth Griffin Whitley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fort Lawn Community Center in Mr. Whitley’s name at Fort Lawn Community Center, P.O. Box 818, Lancaster, SC 29721.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Whitley at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday May 11, 2024, at the Fort Lawn Community Center, 5554 Main St, Fort Lawn, SC 29714.
